A practical guide

See whether your referral loop can become a profitable acquisition channel.

Put it into practice

Estimate referral program ROI before you launch

A referral program is a funnel: eligible customers become advocates, advocates send invitations, and a share of those invitations convert. Small changes at each stage can materially change the number of customers and the reward budget required.

The calculator models that complete loop and compares expected gross profit with rewards and software cost. Use conservative assumptions first, then update the model with observed Refport data after launch.

The referral metrics that matter

Revenue alone can make a weak program look healthy. Track the efficiency and compounding potential of the channel as well.

  • Participation rate: the share of eligible customers who refer
  • Invites per advocate: how broadly each participant shares
  • Referral conversion rate: the share of invitations that become customers
  • Effective referral CAC: rewards and program cost per acquired customer
  • Viral coefficient: the new advocates each customer is expected to create

Questions, answered

About the referral program roi calculator

How is referral program ROI calculated?+

The calculator subtracts reward and software costs from the gross profit generated by referred customers, then divides the remaining profit by total program cost.

What is a viral coefficient?+

It estimates how many additional customers each customer creates through referrals. A value above one suggests a self-compounding loop, although retention and timing still affect real growth.

Should I use revenue or gross profit?+

Use gross profit when judging program economics. Revenue includes money required to deliver and support the product and can overstate the return available for rewards.
